Why Does Poverty Exist In Our Society Today

Summited by Chauncey Huggins

Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. The United States of America is a rich nation with an established government. Poor countries around the world have a weak government that does not support its people, which is one of the major causes of poverty. Segragation or the issuse with race is also a cause to why individuals may be at a poverty level. People who are involved with a natrual disater, are also victims who may fall at the poverty level, due to lack of shelter , food etc..
The United States of America is a rich nation with a large amount of captial, which is (machiery) etc... Poor countries around the world have alot of labour within the country but have a weak government. A stratergy that poor people try to achieve is to get higher paying jobs so they can make a living for themselves. Poverty also is a major cause in the US because the jobs that are created are limited to people based on experience, race, sometimes gender, knowledge and much more.
People can be discriminated or segragated against, which is a cause to why one individual may fall to the poverty line. Some people are discriminated by their disablity which can cause poverty, the color of their skin, how they look, the gender, weight or hight, and much more can be a fact to why one may not be able to reach the financial stability they need to servive in the world today. The wadges that some people obtain can be a cause of violence or drugs. People sometimes think if i can't get farely paid or paid enough then why should i have to work when i can just sell drugs and have money to live on.
In hurrican Katrina which occured in August of 2005, many people who lived in the state of New Orleans, wether they were upper class, middle class or lower class dropped to the poverty level. Many people were lacking food, economic stability, and no place to live or stay. Some people who needed to be medically treated could not be trated because they could not afford the cost of the medicine need to treat their condition, or they didn't have health insurance. People from all over the United States were willing to help financially as well as materially, to get people back on track of having some stability in their lives.
In today's society people are estimated to living on 1.25 cents a day. People are dieing of starvation becasue of poverty, But if we as a world could come together and figure out what can be done about the poverty level, and how things can be improved and where every one could have some kind of income to help them servive. I think the world woud be a better place.

  1. Chauncey, I completely agree with what you are saying. Our society does not have to experience the poverty that it does, but because of prejudicies shown in many different aspects of life we have to find ways to deal with it.I think that a video clip showing how the victims of hurricane Katrina were dealing with this and how they over came these obsticles would really drive home your point.
