Race in America
In the United States, today race and ethnicity still plays a major role in our society. The U.S. is the only country with so many diverse ethnicities; everyone wants to live the American dream, for a better life. But, what happens when your race and ethnicity keeps you from accomplishing the American dream? When the federal policies cater predominantly for the Whites; giving then more advantages. According to Ferber and Kimmel, white privilege refers to rights or immunities granted to people as a particular benefit or favor simply because they are White.
Many immigrants suffer hardship in the U.S, they must work extremely hard in education and through jobs to get recognition and build their status. Though America is the land known as the melting pot, people from all over the world come this country to start a life, to work and raise their family. Many immigrants choose this country because of so many opportunities to achieve and better themselves.
According to the 2010 US Census Bureau, the Hispanic and Asian populations grew the fastest during the decade. The Asian population grew from 10.2 million in 2000 to 14.7 million in 2010, gaining the most in the share if the total population, growing from 4 percent to about 5 percent over the last decade. Also, the Hispanic population increased by 15.2 million between 2000 and 2010, accounting for over half of the 27.3 million increase in the total population of the United States. The Census Bureau stated that 2000 and 2010, the Hispanic population grew by 43 percent, which was four times the growth in the total population at 10 percent.
America is a wonderful place. It’s filled with so many different race and ethnicity from all over the world; this is the land of freedom and equality for all.
