If you were to think about the gender roles in family during the 1950's what would come to mind? You would probably think automatically that the father was the strong, bread winning backbone to the family. He was supposed to make everything right no matter the circumstance. He was to protect and provide for the family by any means neccasary. Now what about the mother? The mother was supposed to be more nuturing always jumping to fufill her husbands needs. She did not work but, stayed home with the children and did all the household chores. Women were looked down upon and were only seen as breeders and caretakers. They didn't hold as much value as the males did. But during one of the wars the United States was helping to fight all the men were gone at war so what were the woman to do then? They had to hold down their families themselves, so they went out got jobs, were the only person bringing in income. That I believe is when the Roles started changing.
Today you see the total opposite of the roles. Now sometimes the father stays home with the children and doesn't work. Mothers now are the main parent bringing in the income and are the backbone to the family. They don't just stay in the kitchen anymore or attend to the chores they're out in the work force. Or sometimes both the parents are working and splitting the responsibilities in the house 50/50. Also they're more single parents in this day and age.
In the photo above it shows that the husband and wife have switched clothes. The man is wearing the dress and the woman is wearing the mans suit, basically showing that things have changed.
I personally believe that the way things are now, with everyone being equal and everyone being allowed to do their own things are way better. This I believe gives women more self esteem and teaches them independence, not to rely on a man for anything.
