Education Inequality

Jerrin R

Why do minorities in America lack the education opportunities given to those in the mainstream? According to the video below the problems are segregation and fast track programs.
When there are no white people in an area there is a lack of tax funds from which to run public institutions like schools. Lack of funds mean that schools have to cut corners to cut costs. This is something that is practical and can have serious implications for the students. I think that in order to get this problem solved you want the funds for education to come from the federal government so that property taxes can be collected on the federal level and redistributed equally to all school district based on the population of children in that school districts.
Does tracking destroy educational success?
Now there are two forms of tracking, One where you get promoted for successful work and one where you get demoted for lack of success. I think that only demotion should be removed. Why penalize an able students because the rest of his class cannot sacrifice their time, their energy and be dedicated as he is? I think that this is extremely unfair because I believe in hard work and the ability that a man should be able to enjoy the fruits of HIS labor. I believe in equality unless an individual can EXCEL more than another individual and this does not count if his rewards come at the EXPENSE of others. I think that life is all about choices and there are always opportunity costs but success should be based on acquired qualities and never on inherent qualities that you are born into/with.

  1. Jerrin, you made some good points.
While I don’t agree with the statement "When there are no white people in an area there is a lack of tax funds...", simply because I don’t believe there is one neighborhood where there aren’t even a small group of white people, I do believe the lack of their presences or the fact that there isn’t and abundance of them living in that area does have some affect on the funding.
If we as a people don’t make noise to get what we need or feel our children deserve then know one will hear us. We are the minority so we DO stand out, but just in the wrong ways. While we may be able to point the finger at higher ups we still must take responsibility for ourselves.

  2. I do agree with this blog. Penalizing people who can't help where they were born is unfair. This means we are not all created equal as they say.We all have the same opportunity but really we don't. Poor people are neglected. It seems that the system s designed to keep poor people down instead of building them up. In the video he is correct ITS UNFAIR that some suffer because of lack of resources.

  3. I agree J! It isn't right that students that are really serious about their education should suffer because of their location. Everyone should have the right to a good education. People are quick to say that urban children aren't serious about education when that true in most cases. They just don't have access to the proper tools to learn.
