How Women are redefining the gender role in sports

 Submitted by Navita
Gender role-plays a significant part in society. We learn our gender role through parents, teachers, peers, television, magazines, books and religion that implicates how males and females should be portrayed. The feminist movement has paved the way for women in the Western culture fighting for equal rights, economic, and social rights. The feminist movement helped women to differentiate their role in society, for example, sports where women are professional athletes in basketball, softball, tennis, golf and soccer. The opportunities for female athletes in sports have increased drastically throughout the years. However, they’re successful athletes but still face criticisms for their gender in sports by critics claiming, “that it’s not their place” or “they’re trying to be men.” Women athletes train hard and play hard in the competitiveness of sports but still lag behind the men athletes.
Overall, these strong, powerful, hardworking athletes are being acknowledge in their sports career, for instance, the USA Women's Soccer Team that made the finals, even though they didn’t win the championship; they were recognized throughout world for their performance. This is setting a great example for many young girls growing up in society, today. Your gender shouldn’t hold you back from going after your dreams. These women are not only athletes they are moms, wives and balancing other obligations in their lives. This proves that women can definitely manage it all from having a career and raising a family, they are redefining the gender role.

I think you did a good job looking at how women are changing the way gender was defined by society. I like how you used sports to discuss how women are just as capable of men in doing certain activities. I could not help noticing how you talked this,
"Women athletes train hard and play hard in the competitiveness of sports but still lag behind the men athletes. "
What made you say that? Is it just that women do not get the same resources available to men in order to train or because men have a physiological advantage in physical sports.
What is you view on women having to wear revealing clothing in order to play sports like soccer and football in order to market the event to men?
Is it weird that there were only white women in that team on the video?
I am not anti feminist. I just feel that women and men play roles that sometimes just cannot be replaced by the opposite sex.
Examples are things like breastfeeding for women. For men its things like having sperm.

Either way, at the end of the day, whenever any great man stands on a podium and leads a nation or does anything extraordinary, people rarely see the greater mother that raised him up and nurtured him to be great.

I think at the end of the day. We need to fight for equality but we should do so sensibly. Men just cant get pregnant or nurture kids like women do. Physically you can never have the strongest woman on earth ever beat up the strongest man on earth.

  2. I agree 100% that women and or any minority for that matter should receive equal rights. We're are all human so why not? My dentist is a woman, I have had female barber in the past, and one of my favorite auto-mechanics is a woman. All jobs people would normally think only a man can and should do. I don't discreminate, skills are skills. With sports, some of the best basketball point guards in Philly I played with were girls. One being Chanell Ross and the other the great Dawn Staley to name a few. People can do whatever they want in life but at the same time everybody comes with an advantage and a disadvantage. For example, men are physically dominating while women are smarter. Yeah guys I said it, FEMALES ARE SMARTER!!!

To answer a few of your questions starting with "Is it weird that there were only white women in that team on the video?". The video Navita posted is of the US National Soccer Team of which played in the 2011 World Cup. Yes, every memeber is white but many races play the sport world wide just in America the sport is just beginning to catch on. Most Black women in this country tend to play basketball or take part in Track and Field anyway. No Soccer fields in urban areas to play on anyway. Far as women lagging behind men in athletics. Sorry, but it will always be that way only because sports are very physcial and thats the one advantage men's bodies have over women's. Lastly I believe uniforms are fair across the board in sports in both genders. You mention football and if you were refering to Lingere Football let me know beacuse its a joke and doesn't count as a real sport. The only sport I could probally say needs an update would be Women's Tennis, maybe.

You cannot always say that one of the sexes is smarter. What you can say is that different individuals are different. I am NOT justifying lower wages or statuses. ALL I AM TELLING IS that we are DEPENDENT on each other. In the field of PHYSICAL PROWESS - MEN are fundamentally designed to have more muscle mass, chemical triggers etc than women. You can NEVER replace a mother's love with a father because he's just a man. DOES NOT MEAN that he wont try... but its impossible.
If we can use nature to justify homosexuality we can definitely use nature to justify male dominance.
End of the day. We are not animals. EQUALITY with COMMON SENSE has to rule.
I mean 99.9% of everything can be done by both sexes so why are we even having an issue like this??
