Authorities pursue for obidence changes your behavior

Submitted by: Dowwitt Denson

When you think of jail you think of several different things. For instance, some think of guys working out trying to get stronger or people constantly getting raped. The one thing that people never think about is what happens in jail to make these convict really become a true convict. In each prison there is a prison guard who gets paid to keep these inmates in line and keep charge of the prison. Do you ever think about what they do to keep these thousands of inmates subdued? Well I think I would know firsthand of how cruel some prisons can be to inmates. I was arrested for breaking into homes and sentenced to three months in jail. Even being my first real offense really didn’t matter due to the county I was held in. During my stay I witnessed some of the most violent and humiliating tactic ever taken to make a group of inmates change their view of the authority. Most of the men that stayed there with me were repeated offenders and didn’t have a care for authority. Due to that fact the wardens gave all of the prison guards a copy of our records and told to study and learn our weaknesses and exploit them. Every day they would wake us up in the middle of the night and have all us inmate’s complete tasks. These tasks went from cleaning our cell to doing ridiculous workouts and even chanting outrageous comments. It was after my first couple of months that I started to realizes the real reason for convicts having such a criminal behavior. It even started to affect my behavior. I started to hate the prison guards and any real sense of authority. You can only imagine how this would affect a person that had been there for years. One night they hand me and everybody on our block hold a bucket of water shoulder length and we were told if me dropped it we would have to do pushups until we passed out. Other times we were told to line up and have them say some the most embarrassing things that they found in our folders. It was then that I realized why so many convicts that get released have such a strong hate for authority. It’s like they change or behavior to fear authority but ends up making us have a new found hate for people who are supposed to be there to help us.

As you can see these are prisoners from Iraq being tortured and humiliated in prison. I myself have never personally seen anything like this during my time in prison, nor do I think prison guards take this kind of abuse with American inmates. But hopefully this makes you realize how and why most prisoners’ behavior changes for authority. Due to the unfair treatment at some of these prisons it grows a huge hate for authority and also changes a group’s behavior towards authority. Just look at the view some Middle Eastern countries have of the United States. In one picture the guy posed with his arms out is covered in his entire cells bowels, something that I personally could never imagine or even think anyone else could. In the second picture an inmate is stripped completely naked and frightened while two police trained K9’s are inches away from inflecting severe pain.
In conclusion from my own personal experiences and from the pictures I have shown. I hope to show how the authorities pursue of obedience of groups often creates a new behavior towards overall authority. Just from my experience I hope you have a new sense on why some people that come from jail are normally never the same. Not to say that this is the treatment at every prison (which it isn’t), but to help you have a better understanding for all some prisoners go through. Even with the U.S soldiers torturing the Iraq slaves. I hope this shows how the pursue of obedience can last cause a dislike or even hate for authority in some peoples behavior.
